Bechtel and Cumulus Digital Systems have successfully implemented a bolted joint management system on a large scale through their partnership.
FREMONT, CA: "The strong results from our partnership with Bechtel demonstrate the value that digitalization brings to construction," says Matthew Kleiman, CEO of Cumulus. "We are excited to take this partnership even further and continue to use technology to eliminate rework and enable greater work transparency." Cumulus Digital Systems, a global technology platform that enables connected work, has successfully partnered with Bechtel to implement a bolted joint management system on a large scale. In addition to enforcing engineering controls and increasing productivity, the deployment successfully reduced the bolted connection leak rate from the industry average of 10 percent to 0.1 percent.
Ineffective management of bolted joints results in leaks that emit more than 170 million metric tonnes of greenhouse gases annually. Bechtel chose to implement Cumulus Smart Torque System (STS) during the construction of the Pennsylvania Chemicals project to further its commitment to reducing emissions and improving safety.
The STS technology patented by Cumulus consists of three primary components—a dashboard and database hosted in the cloud for managing data and visualizing field operations, a Bluetooth-enabled mobile application that guides workers through workflow steps, communicates with the Control Center, and connects to tools. Connected Tools sets target values and records actual values in real time over a Bluetooth wireless connection.
Kleiman presents the technology alongside John Tottenham, Innovation Implementation Manager at Bechtel, at the GasTech 2022 Conference in Milan, Italy.
Bechtel has spent over a century assisting clients in navigating shifts in energy consumption, technological development, financing challenges, and an intensifying emphasis on sustainable alternatives.
"We are continually focused on applying proven and emerging technologies to lower carbon emissions," says John Tottenham, Bechtel's Innovation Implementation Manager. "By pairing our data management system with Cumulus' platform, we were able to implement digital solutions using data-backed insights to meet customer goals while continuing to improve safety for our people, our communities, and the planet.
