Biofuels, for example, can be used to power automobiles and other vehicles or converted into bio-based products such as plastics. Biofuels are a renewable energy source: One of the most significant advantages of biofuels is that they are a renewable and ecologically beneficial energy source. Initially, biofuel was defined as a fuel obtained from living organisms, often through photosynthesis. Bio-oil and biodiesel fuels are made by fermenting plant oils such as soybean or seed oil to produce ethanol or biodiesel.
This process results in a decrease in carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere and, in some cases, a net gain of oxygen. Since Henry Ford's Model T initially operated on ethanol fuel manufactured from corn syrup, biofuels have been used to power automobiles; biodiesel is made by chemically transforming renewable vegetable oils or animal fats into sulfur-free liquid fuels.

On the other side, biofuels may contribute to environmental problems such as deforestation—to make more area available for agricultural cultivation and higher water requirements due to irrigation, reducing biodiversity when natural ecosystems such as forests are altered.

Renewable biofuel sources include biomass, landfill biogas, municipal waste, corn ethanol produced via wet or dry milling, biodiesel produced via transmogrification of vegetable oils with methanol (wet method) or chemical reaction using an alkaline catalyst in the presence of water (dry method), and bagasse, a residue obtained after sugarcane juice extraction that has a variety of uses.
