The European and Ukrainian renewables associations call on Ukrainian leaders to set a target of at least 50 per cent renewables in Ukraine’s electricity mix by 2030, and for a dedicated “Renewables for Ukraine” vehicle as part of the joint Strategic Reconstruction Plan and the Ukraine reconstruction platform.
FREMONT, CA: The solar and wind industries in Europe firmly stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine. We pray that Ukraine's ongoing human misery comes to an immediate end. The vulnerabilities of Europe's energy system—namely, its excessive reliance on Russian fossil imports—have been exposed by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Kadri Simson, EU Commissioner for Energy, emphasised that the EU is working quickly to reduce this dependence and strengthen Europe's energy security at a hybrid event co-hosted by WindEurope, SolarPower Europe, the Ukrainian Wind Energy Association (UWEA), and the Solar Energy Association of Ukraine (ASEU). In the interim, the EU is increasing energy efficiency, expanding renewable energy sources, and diversifying its energy sources.
The EU is unwavering in its support for the Ukrainian people on the day of the International Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC 2022) in Lugano. The EU will step up its efforts to support the hard-hit Ukrainian economy's recovery. The renovation and modernization of Ukraine's energy industry will be a crucial component of this help. The future independence and prosperity of the nation will be supported by solar and wind energy, which are the most cost-effective and scalable technologies. In a joint statement, the European and Ukrainian Solar and Wind Associations urged the leaders of Ukraine and the EU to embrace renewable energy and renewable hydrogen in the country's post-war reconstruction by setting a goal of at least 50% renewable electricity production by 2030 using a combination of rooftop and ground-mounted solar power as well as onshore and offshore wind. The wind and solar industries in Europe are prepared to assist Ukraine. As part of the joint Strategic Rebuilding Plan and the Ukraine reconstruction platform, Ukrainian and European leaders should establish a special Renewables for Ukraine vehicle to achieve the 50 per cent goal.
