Fremont, CA: A research group from the Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, jumped in developing a special type of molecule that is competent to retain energy dominated by solar panels. The team has advanced a system that can utilize these molecules in liquid form to heat homes and run appliances, to decrease the need for fossil fuels.
MOST(Molecular Solar Thermal Energy Storage) uses existing technologies to convert thermal energy and water into steam, which can be transformed into electrical energy. The system can be recycled for hundreds of cycles and is completely non-toxic. After years of trials, research, and prototypes, the first possible solar-powered storage system is started, and it is supposed to roll out for commercial use within the following ten years.
Team researcher Kasper Moth-Poulsen stated that no considerable degradation was recorded even after running 125 cycles. MOST work in a circular manner. Primary, the liquid catches energy from sunlight in a solar thermal collector located on the roof of the building. Then the energy is saved at room temperature, which causes minimized energy losses.
The warmth can later be utilized in a domestic heating system, and the liquid can be sent back to the roof to collect more energy. The complete process is free of emissions and is done without harming the molecule. Till 18 years, the energy can be stored in the isomer.
When the energy is extorted for use, the warmth is more important than expected. The group has created a catalyst for managing the release of stored energy; the catalyst will act like a filter using which the liquid will flow, creating a reaction that can heat the fluid by 63 centigrade.
The research team made many significant advances, and now they submitted an emission-free energy system. In previous versions, the system depended on a liquid partly composed of an explosive chemical called toluene. But, in the present system, researchers have found a way to eliminate the dangerous toluene and make it just the energy storing molecule. The next step would be to join every aspect into a coherent system.
