National Grid and the Town of Hempstead, NY to Develop One of the First Green Hydrogen Blending Projects in the Country
National Grid, a major utility, in conjunction with the Town of Hempstead, in York state, announced a joint project to build one of the first and largest clean hydrogen projects in the country that will decarbonize networks. The project located on Long Island will blend green hydrogen into the existing distribution system to heat approximately 800 homes and fuel 10 municipal vehicles.
An existing facility that was developed in 2009 by the Town of Hempstead and National Grid currently provides locally produced green hydrogen for vehicles. This project will be expanded upon to blend hydrogen for heating homes and transportation at the same time. This green hydrogen can be safely injected into the National Grid’s distribution system as a clean energy source for customers adjacent to the facility.
ODIN EPC Selected to Provide Design and Construction Support Services
ODIN has been selected as the first engineering and construction company to support Hydrogen Injection and Blending into a Natural Gas Distribution System in the United States. The concept behind injecting renewable hydrogen into the existing natural gas piping infrastructure is to further improve the carbon footprint of natural gas to heat homes which is already much better than an oil or coal alternative. Hydrogen and Natural Gas delivered through the existing massive natural gas infrastructure promotes a cost effective solution to support carbon reduction goals.

Hydrogen produced through clean pathways can be injected into natural gas pipelines, and the resulting blend can be used to generate heat and power. These green blends have lower emissions than using unblended natural gas.
