Everything comes with some benefits and disadvantages.
FREMONT, CA: A solid-state battery is a most awaited technology, especially for car manufacturers worldwide. These batteries are considered to be powerful enough to obsolete the Li-ion batteries.
Lately, Qing Tao Energy Development Co. Start-up from China, announced setting up the production line for the solid-state battery, which will initially produce batteries with 100MWh per year and be considered for mass production later.
As this technology is yet in its production and research stage, there are no real key benefits that can be firmly stated. However, depending upon the reports few gifts that could be witnessed when this tech finally arrives have been listed below. So naturally, these specifications are the main attraction to car manufacturers, making them invest heftily in solid-state batteries.
• Quicker charging as the electrodes would solid in the state.
• Longer service life over Lithium-ion battery.
• Improved safety as it is non-flammable and non-corrosive
• Compatibility with automation, industry standards, and roll-to-roll production would increase manufacturability.
• Could eradicate temperature constraints.
Everything comes with some benefits and disadvantages, which goes for this new technology. As ever with technology, there’s a large difference between small-scale and mass-scale production, and the same could be observed in the case of solid-state batteries.
It is still unclear whether they will be able to fulfil the performance needs of electric vehicles. The power density is also a challenge in comparison to traditional lithium-ion batteries. Will they be cost-effective enough to be employed like Li-ion ones?
Many investors have already spent on this tech to speed up the process and benefit from it. It is highly anticipated that by 2020 solid-state batteries will come into presence as final products. Once this tech steps into the market, only its standards and specifications will be clear to all. By that time, car manufacturers could only hope to take over the drawbacks of lithium-ion batteries so they could optimize them to their best.
