STOFF2 addresses this need with a forward-thinking approach, positioning itself as a visionary leader inspired by the pioneers of Germany’s solar revolution. The company is dedicated to redefining energy storage and utilisation, bringing renewable energy to all sectors, especially those which have hard-to-abate carbon emissions.
Balancing Intermittent Renewable Energy Production and Shifting to Green Hydrogen
The global shift towards renewable energy presents many challenges, especially in regions like Germany, Western and Southern Europe, where the drive to end fossil fuel dependence is very powerful. The issue isn’t just about generating enough renewable power; it’s about managing the intermittent nature of resources like solar and wind power.
On days when the sun is shining brightly or the wind is blowing steadily, more renewable power is often produced than can be used or stored, leading to significant curtailment—essentially wasted energy. In Germany alone, more than ten terawatt hours of renewable energy were curtailed in 2023, enough to power millions of households. This phenomenon is expected to worsen as renewable energy generation continues to expand.
Another pressing challenge is the existing reliance on grey hydrogen, which is produced using fossil fuels, especially natural gas. Despite consuming nearly 100 million tons of hydrogen annually for energy intensive industries like steel, cement, glass and fertilisers, a staggering 98 per cent of this hydrogen is still produced using methods emitting significant amounts of carbon dioxide. Transitioning this production to green hydrogen—hydrogen generated from renewable energy—is crucial for achieving global decarbonisation goals.
Vision for a Decarbonized Future through Advanced Energy Solutions
Andrew Zwinkels and Alexander Voigt, the masterminds behind STOFF2, identified an immediate need for a novel approach to energy storage and hydrogen generation. This resulted in the creation of a transformative electrolyser that integrates energy storage and electrolyser capabilities in one device.
We've designed a solution that uses wind and sun to provide green hydrogen 24/7. Thereby, we will end fossil fuel dependence. That's our ultimate goal
This innovation doesn’t just reduce the waste of excess renewable energy; it also provides a cost-effective and scalable solution for industries that rely on hydrogen, helping to decarbonise sectors that are difficult to electrify, such as steel production, heavy-duty transport, aviation, and many other energy-intensive industries. Integrating energy storage and hydrogen production into a single device, STOFF2 offers a more streamlined, lower-cost alternative to the traditional approach of using separate batteries and electrolysers, simplifying the energy system’s complexity.
Bringing the Vision to Life
In addition, STOFF2’s vision is not just about technological innovation; it’s about driving a fundamental shift in how the world thinks about energy. The company’s ultimate goal is to create a global energy system that is 100 per cent renewable, decarbonised, and sustainable. This vision is already taking shape, with plans to launch a giga factory by the end of the decade, scaling up production to meet the growing demand for green hydrogen in Germany, Europe and beyond.
“We’ve designed a solution that will enable green hydrogen production at prices attractive enough to end fossil fuel dependence,” says Sebastian Sipp, CEO of STOFF2. “That’s our ultimate goal.”
STOFF2’s technology is already gaining traction through key pilot projects, including a significant EU-funded initiative in Alkmaar, the Netherlands. This project, involving 28 companies and research institutes, aims to create a self-sufficient energy ecosystem in a region that relies heavily on energy imports. The ZZE from STOFF2 will be essential to the project, working with local wind power to create green hydrogen for two important purposes—transport and local industries.
As the company builds out its factories and prepares for large-scale deployment, the team’s excitement is palpable. The ultimate goal is to end fossil fuel dependence by making green hydrogen production affordable, 24/7 reliable and accessible, enabling industries to achieve net-zero emissions.
Combining energy storage and conversion in a single device, STOFF2 has simplified the renewable energy equation and provided a critical tool for industries looking to decarbonise. Leveraging a solid foundation, breakthrough technology, and a clear future vision, STOFF2 is prepared to be a major player in the global energy shift.
