As a young engineer 25 years ago starting my career in the utility industry, I often wondered who are these men and women who were leaving their homes and families to mobilize and prepare for an upcoming storm? They would unselfishly work long days and well into the night, all having one goal “to restore the vital energy and water service for our customers and community. They are our utility workers; men and women who work every day behind the scenes and go even further during unforeseen natural disasters to keep the lights on and the water flowing. They often go unnoticed because when they do their jobs right, millions of families across the United States have continuous utility service with minimal interruptions, even during inclement weather.
