The benefits and drawbacks of hydrogen fuel cells are still being debated, but despite current restrictions, hydrogen is still an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels that can be applied to provide versatile and high-density power and propulsion for a variety of industrial plants and modes of transportation with hydrogen fuel cell technology.
Fremont, CA: Hydrogen fuel cells utilize hydrogen as a fuel in an electrochemical reaction that mixes hydrogen and oxygen to make electricity and water. The reverse electrolysis method, which produces 'green' hydrogen and oxygen from water, may leverage various renewable energy resources (wind, wave, and solar) to produce hydrogen as a source for renewable power generation. There is also rising interest in hydrogen power as an exceptionally pure energy source capable of producing heat and emitting only water byproducts.
Hydrogen fuel cell technology extends several benefits over traditional power sources, including:
Renewable and Readily Available
Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. Despite the difficulties associated with its extraction from water, it is a particularly plentiful and renewable source of energy, ideal for our future zero-carbon combined heat and power requirements.
Highly Efficient Compared to Other Energy Sources
Hydrogen fuel cells outperform conventional energy sources, including several green energy options. This improved fuel efficiency enables more energy per pound of fuel. For example, an average combustion-based power plant generates electricity at 33-35% efficiency, but hydrogen fuel cells may achieve up to 65% efficiency. The same is true for automobiles, with hydrogen fuel cells using 40-60% of the fuel's energy while reducing fuel usage by 50%.
Almost Zero Emissions
Hydrogen fuel cells do not release greenhouse gases like fossil fuels, lowering pollution and increasing air quality.
Reduces Carbon Footprints
Hydrogen fuel cells emit nearly no greenhouse gasses, leaving no carbon footprint when in operation.
Fast Charging Times
Hydrogen fuel cell power units charge extraordinarily quickly, comparable to conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) cars and far faster than battery-powered electric vehicles. Hydrogen fuel cells can be recharged within five minutes, but electric cars charge for 30 minutes to several hours. Because of their quick charging time, hydrogen-powered vehicles offer the same flexibility as conventional automobiles.
No Noise Pollution
Unlike conventional renewable energy sources like wind power, hydrogen fuel cells do not emit noise pollution. This implies that, like electric automobiles, hydrogen-fueled vehicles are far quieter than those driven by traditional internal combustion engines.
No Visual Pollution
Some low-carbon energy sources, such as wind turbines and biofuel power plants, can be unsightly; however, hydrogen fuel cells do not require as much area, resulting in less visual pollution.
Longer Usage Times
Hydrogen fuel cells provide increased efficiency in terms of utilization times. A hydrogen car has the same range as a fossil-fueled vehicle (around 300 miles). This is better than what electric cars (EVs) already provide, which are increasingly being built with fuel cell power units as 'range-extenders.' In contrast to EVs, hydrogen fuel cells are unaffected by ambient temperature and do not degrade in cold weather. This advantage is enhanced when combined with the quick charging durations.
